Rwanda : HIV/AIDS Victims blame lack of condoms over increased infections
Jul 29th 2012, 08:19

Although condom use in Rwanda is one of the weapons to prevent Aids, the big number of Rwandans gets Aids due to lack of condoms.

According to Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), not distributing condoms to where they are needed leads some residents to catch HIV/Aids.

During the meeting with health workers in charge of fighting Aids in Gatsibo district, Jacques Gakungu revealed that research made on Aids spread in Rwanda shows that prostitutes that do not use condoms get Aids at 51percent.

In 2011, 614 school girls became pregnant and 139 of them were primary school pupils. One primary kid aged nine years became pregnant in Huye district in 2011 which shows youth do not use condoms.

n Gatsibo district like other places, accessing condoms at health centres or from government pharmacies was not easy because they were meant for those in family planning program.

Gakungu adds a new method will be introduced whereby condoms will be available for whoever needs them. Getting them from pharmacies and hospitals will require one to show how they will be distributed to residents.

This method comes to life after realising that many residents like in cooperatives and associations do not get condoms, which is an obstacle to reducing the spread of Aids.

Jacques Gakungu laments it's shameful that hotels put bibles to light but hide condoms when big numbers of people that have sexual intercourses in those hotels can save their lives by using condoms at their disposal.

This program will distribute free condoms as a way of increasing the number of users to save lives. In Rwanda, Rwf70,000 female condoms are used while 21million male condoms are used.
