Rwanda | Bugesera: Male circumcision encouraged to reduce HIV/AIDS, STDs infections
Jul 26th 2012, 06:56

The youth in Bugesera district have been sensitized to circumcise to decrease the risk of acquiring and infecting their spouses with HIV/AIDS, according to  Dr. Alfred Rutagengwa; one of professionals in the Medical field.

The expert said, the first research on the advantages of circumcision for reducing the risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS in 1986 showed that a man's prepuce can be the cause of acquiring or infecting a woman with HIV/AIDS because of its softness during unprotected sexual encounter when one of them is infected with the virus.

Male circumcision encouraged

"the male genital is so sensitive and tender especially when the prepuce skin is covering it and therefore he can get hurt during sexual intercourse and HIV virus can get a way easily thus get infected." Dr. Alfred Rutagengwa explained.

He went on to say that when a person is circumcised the penis' skin becomes strong and it cannot just be hurt so easily. He said that though no one can say that circumcision can protect a person from HIV/AIDS in case of an unprotected sex, the risk of getting AIDS is slightly lower compared to the uncircumcised person.

Apart from the fact that prepuce makes the foreskin so tender, it keeps much dirt and it needs too much cleanliness and can make a person acquire Sexual Transmitted Diseases/Infections.

In order to reduce the new HIV/AIDS         infections in Rwanda, all men are being sensitized to participate in circumcision program which started in 2012 and it is expected to circumcise about 2 million males by the end of 2015.
