The yet-to-be completed Africa College of Theology (ACT) building
Africa New Life Ministries, a Christian non-profit organization is in the advanced stages of opening to the public the first ever theological college in Kigali.
According to the ministry's founder, Pastor Charles Mugisha, Africa College of Theology (ACT) will provide non-traditional Biblical education leading to an accredited Bachelor of Theology Degree for pastors in Rwanda.
Mugisha says that the initiative to come up with this kind of college rose from the great need in Rwanda where currently 95 per cent of pastors have not received any formal theological training.
The college will be situated at the Ministries' Dream Center in Kicukiro district and will open its doors for the first time with the first fifty students in January next year.
"We will begin with a certificate programme which will be taught for one and a half years. We will then upgrade to a diploma level programme of two years in September next year before eventually rolling out the four-year Bachelors programme in September 2014.
Speaking to ubwenge.com, the executive Director of the Ministry Fred Katagwa explained that in the long run the institution will have to incorporate other faculties.
"Currently, we are focusing on theology because that is where the big need is, but as time goes by, we plan to introduce other programmes which we think can compliment theology," said Katagwa.
The college has direct link with Multnomah University in Portland USA which will be occasionally sending visiting professors to compliment the local faculty.
Mugisha says that through sponsors who are injecting money in the soon-to-be completed college building, it will cost up to $1 million (approximately Rwf600 million).
Inside the new library: It is stocked with about 2, 000 books
Through the Multnomah University friends, the university the university readily has a well equipped theological library of about 2, 000 books. The library is one of the largest in Rwanda and is estimated to have cost $500, 000 (approximately Rwf300 million). The library will be soon open even to the public.
The January intake expects to begin with a maximum of fifty students.
