About 483 old men and women used to be miners residing in Ngororero district have spent many days going to the District offices for their salaries that the Mining Society in Rwanda (SOMERWA) owe them; but response has been unclear.

Some of the old miners
These old people explain they worked for this society and they were later replaced or fired without being given their benefits or their salaries.
They explain that they were yet to be paid and some of them started presenting their complaints since 1986 and some presented their cases to the courts of law where they won their cases but were never paid.
After this delay, they approached Evariste Barigora the labour personnel in Ngororero district and asked him to make a follow up on their cases who in turn presented this problem to the Ministry of Public Service and Labour (MIFOTRA) to attend to it.
In the dialogue between these people and MIFOTRA, there was a long debate and a misunderstanding about the money they were given in 1991 of which they argued it was their delayed salaries while MIFOTRA argues it included their benefits as well as salaries.
As the money that was paid in 1991 was paid after they won cases from the courts of law, it was decided that the list of which this money was paid on will be looked for and a new list of those who were not paid be made and provide their bank accounts and their money will be paid before November 2012.
